When in Brittany...   

Gastronomy
Brittany does not produce its own wine, but expect strong cider and a type of wild honey mead called chouchen. Specialities are crÍpes (thin pancakes, usually with a sweet filling), savoury galettes (thin pancakes made with buckwheat), as well as tart with prunes and g‚teau Breton. From the sea, mussels, oysters, crab and langoustine are plentiful, the seafood is excellent and cotriade, a hearty fish stew, is a local staple.

Places of Interest
Visit the turreted Chateau de Josselin or Carnac with its Breton ëStonehengeí. Browse the half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and handmade faÔence pottery shops of Quimper. Discover 1,000 aquatic species at Brest's Oceanopolis. Take a cruise up the beautiful Odet river. Go bird watching or see the Belon Estuary oyster beds. Explore the art galleries in Pont Aven.

Sports and Leisure
The mild climate is perfect for numerous outdoor activities, like walking, cycling and horse riding. Windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and surfing are among the water sports on offer, plus sea and river fishing. Brittany has several spectacular golf courses and tennis courts are in most villages. Celebrate Quimperís Festival de Cornouaille in July or Concarneau's Fête des Filets Bleus in August.

With its dramatic rocky coastline, fishing harbours and fine sandy beaches, Brittany is reminiscent of our own West Country, but with the advantage of a milder, sunnier climate, influenced by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and a brightness of light which is a magnet for artists.

Access to our northern Brittany cottages and gites is easy using Brittany Ferries crossings Plymouth/Roscoff or Portsmouth/St. Malo, Caen or Cherbourg routes. 

For southern Brittany, take an overnight ferry arriving early in the morning at Roscoff or St. Malo and most of our southern Brittany cottages are only around 2 hours drive away. 

Alternatively take a ferry or Eurotunnel crossing to Calais and the motorway via Rouen and Caen. It will take you about 8 hours to get to your Brittany holiday cottage.

If you prefer to fly, there are low cost flights to Brest from Luton, Manchester, Birmingham and Southampton or to Rennes from Southampton.
